Y_NIS
Y_NIS, is a collaboration between Nisa Karnsomport, Sylvia Aguiñaga, Emily Leon, & Ruby Ríos – we create interactive installations in public spaces. We’re friends that met at DIY Girls, an organization that enables young girls & women to explore electronics, programming, & design. We learn to make cool art & help others do it, too.
This project was funded by Glendale Arts and the City of Glendale.
Open Arts Music Festival
We partnered with Glendale Arts on their 2nd Open Arts and Music Festival. Glendale Arts and OAM has offered a forum of expression, tools and resources to display and present our work.
Together, we created an interactive bio dome experience for the community of Glendale and the greater LA Area – S.T.E.M education in an alternative atmosphere.

_____
The DOME GARDEN is an immersive educational experience for the community. “When the blood in your veins returns to the sea, and the earth in your bones returns to the ground, perhaps then you will remember that this land does not belong to you, it is you who belongs to this land.” – Native American quote Learn about the diversity, movement, & origins of nature through sight, sound, touch, & smell. Experiences include workshops on collaboration, sound & conditional design, stories about our world, & day & night projections.

The Open Arts & Music Festival provided an opportunity to build community between artist and audience.

My creative process + inspiration

INSPIRATION
We all had a unique approach to executing our projects. I traveled to México City and Chiapas for inspiration. Through this experience, I had the opportunity to visit cultural + design spaces, see what other digital media artists and companies are doing, research Native Mexican textiles, and explore my traditional art techniques.
PROCESS+ DEVELOPMENT
I sketched out designs, drafted out the story board, rendered out my shapes and objects, animated on After Effects, and lastly manipulated the video using Resolum Arena.
CONCEPT
“…contemplate the flower and learn from how to live…”
-Eckhart Tolle
Flowers are the ultimate symbol of the most high and sacred; they take a huge part in expressing devotion and gratitude towards the divine.
The ultimate expression of love is always temporary, and so is my life.
Our Earth is full of constant visceral duality and beauty. I wanted the audience to experience it’s wonderment through a digital lens and interact with it using a midi controller.
“Dentro tuyo esta la semilla de la que pueden nacer millones de flores”
-Facundo Cabral
_____
The colors, patterns, and textures were inspired by my trip back home. I wanted to create an explosion of color through geometric patterns and organic shapes.
COLLABORATION
Together we researched, explored, ideated, drafted, prototyped, revised, tested, and executed our ideas.
EXECUCTION
After weeks of preparing and long hours testing we were ready to VJ the event!
ENGAGMENT
Creating an interact experience was important to us. Audience members were encouraged to come up and participate in the manipulation of our art!
